MONEY / SETUP GUIDE

Paying in China as a visitor

Mobile payment is the practical default, but the resilient setup still includes two wallets, more than one card and cash.

Official ruleReviewed 30 August 20266 min read

THE SHORT VERSION

  • Foreign users can register supported wallets and bind supported overseas cards.
  • Issuer verification, app limits, fees and merchant acceptance can still interrupt a payment.
  • Test a small purchase and retain physical-card and RMB cash fallbacks.
01

Build two payment rails

Official guidance says foreigners can register Alipay and WeChat with a foreign or Chinese phone number and bind supported overseas cards. Complete identity and issuer prompts before relying on the setup.

02

Understand what card linked means

A successfully linked card is not a promise that every merchant, personal QR, peer-to-peer transfer, in-app service, transaction size or issuer will work. Save another eligible card and know how to contact the issuer.

03

Watch the fee threshold

Official guidance states that Alipay and WeChat QR payments funded by an international card add no platform fee at RMB 200 or below and a 3% fee above RMB 200. Issuer foreign-transaction and exchange-rate costs may still apply, and the live app prompt controls.

04

Keep a boring fallback

Carry a modest amount of RMB and a physical card. Official guidance identifies exchange outlets and international-card ATMs; availability and fees still vary.
